The Parish Nurse Ministry
The Parish Nurse is a specialty of the nursing profession, which
combines science, caring and theology to enhance the health status
of those they serve. The Parish Nurse uses a holistic approach that
emphasizes harmony of mind, body and spirit in achieving wellness.
The Parish Nurse Ministry is a partnership between St. Joseph's
Medical Center, local faith communities and registered nurses who
are called to serve as ministers of healing in their congregations.
It is an ecumenical model, recognizing a diversity of belief
systems. The nurse selected participates in a formal training
program which defines the role of the parish nurse, professional
nursing practice, the holistic approach of mind, body and spirit,
and includes continuing education and support group sessions.
Each Parish Nurse assesses and identifies the needs of the
congregation in the areas of physical, mental and spiritual health.
The parish nurse then takes action within the scope of professional
nursing practice and assists faith community members in achieving
optimal health.
There are more than 40 Parish Nurses working in over 30 faith
communities throughout the Central Valley. For more information
