Digital Mobile Mammography
St. Joseph's Mobile Mammography Unit (MMU) is a full-service, self-contained mammography clinic on wheels featuring the latest in state-of-the-art digital mammography technology and service. Thanks to a $1.5 million start-up grant from the Sacramento Valley Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the specially designed 18-wheel tractor-trailer mobile unit is the only one of its kind in California. In addition, the Safeway Foundation has made an annual commitment of $500,000 to fund St. Joseph’s Mobile Mammography program. With the latest donation of $250,000, the Safeway Foundation has contributed $1.25 million dollars to the MMU to help support breast cancer awareness and early detection. The MMU will allow us to offer mammography services to women in 22 Central Valley and mountain counties in the north central region of California.
Early Detection Saves Lives
Every Woman Counts
Breast cancer is the disease many women fear the most, and early detection and treatment can dramatically improve a woman's chances of survival. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. If detected early - and mammography is the best way to do that - the five-year survival rate for patients is more than 90 percent.
More than 800,000 women over the age of 40 reside within the geographic area designated to receive MMU visits, and it is estimated that more than 81,000 have never had a mammogram. In addition to mammograms, patients will also receive clinical breast exams and educational materials addressing breast cancer screening and treatment. The MMU also includes an exam room that can be used to provide other health-related exams.
Access to Services
St. Joseph's MMU will offer convenient access to mammography services by delivering mammography equipment and experienced technicians to women at their workplace, church, community center, or any other easy-to-reach location. We especially want to reach out to women over age 40 that are underserved or uninsured and have limited access to mammography screenings due to work schedules, time constraints, or those living in remote locations.
St. Joseph's Mobile Mammography Unit will visit:
- Rural hospitals
- Medical and community clinics
- Health fairs and other special events
- Public service and government agencies
- Civic and business organizations
- Service and social clubs
